GAAA – Spring 10km Race

- Atletismo (08) 007

A total of 54 athletes contested the GAAA Spring 10kilometre Road Race held on Sunday 12th May last.  The fact the course was set ‘Round the Rock’, no doubt the large entry of runners taking part.

As usual the categories registered were Senior and Veterans for both men and women with 39 men and 15 women taking the starting flag.

The race was flagged away at Fish Market Lane roundabout heading north through Corral Road leading into Winston Churchill Avenue.  At the Sundial runners turned towards Devil’s Tower Road onto Sir Herbert Miles Road through Dudley Way Tunnel out to Europa Advance Road and then turning left at the Europa Road Roundabout and through to Keightley Way Tunnel.  On exiting the tunnel through RosiaBay and onto Rosia Road.  At the Trafalgar Cemetery roundabout another left turn down through Ragged Staff Gate along through Queensway to the King’s Bastion Leisure centre, right turn to Reclamation Road and finish at the foot of the American War Memorial Steps.

As is usual with this type of races runners formed various packs for the first couple of kilometres and then the gaps began to form.  However we did see for some considerable time 4 or 5 runners forming the leading pack till Noel Lyons, Michael Neish and Marcus O’Toole began to pull off from Gyan Chappory, Max McGiffen and Andrew Lee Jones.

As for the women, it was a tough race with Maria Do Nacimiento being the first lady home with an overall 29th Place.

- Atletismo (08) 401

Once again, when Kelvin Gomez (at university in UK) is not taking part, the eventual winner was a veteran runner.  Noel Lyons clocked 36.58 to win ahead of Michael Neish.   Marcus O’Toole was 3rd overall and 1st senior competitor.  As for the women the best veteran runner was Angelica Weyrich who was 36th overall.
