GAAA Round the Rock ‘12

Kelvin Gomez on vacation from his studies at Loughborough, University, consolidated himself as Gibraltar’s top long distance runner, winning his 3rd Gibraltar 10km Road Race (Round the Rock) on the trot.
A week earlier he claimed the GAAA 1st Classic Track Mile Race at the Victoria Stadium clocking a time of 4:35.50.
The race is a new addition to the GAAA heavy calendar that will become an annual event to be held during the National Day sporting events.
This first classic Track Mile race attracted 33 athletes (23men/10 women) running over 3 races held so to accommodate all the participants. The men’s race was won by Kelvin Gomez as mentioned in 4:35.50 with Karl Baldachino (4:49.30) and Jerai Torres (5:05.20) taking 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
Kim Baglietto was 13th overall, won the women’s race clocking 5:38.70 with Allison Edwards (5:53.90 and Aouatif Ghabraoui (6:25.20) 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Over 40 athletes turned up to negotiate the GASAA 10km Road Race 2012 (Round the Rock) on Sunday 23rd September last.
Participants of both genders participated in the senior and veteran classes, most of which were joggers and up coming athletes (8 women and 33men).
It was evident from the start Kelvin was going to have few problems from the rest of the field. He took the lead along Devils Tower Road and was never to look back. He simply ran a lonely race to the finish where he clocked 34.20. I am sure Kelvin would have bettered his time had he had strong opposition. His immediate followers practically left the chase along Devil’s Tower Road towards Catalan Bay Road.
It was a close struggle for runners up spot between Jonathan Blackledge, Noel Lyons, Mick Ruoogn, Robert Matto (jnr) and Michael Niesh with Sarah Bullman (1st woman home) on the agenda. But it was Jonathan who engaged a second gear up Keightley Way Tunnel to also complete a lonely race leaving his immediate followers to contest the 3rd place and the age categories. This claimed by Noel Lyons who went on to claim the Veterans race.
Sarah Bullman, first woman home was 7th overall in 40.08, claiming the veteran’s race on the process.
Trudy McGiffen was 14th overall and Nicole Martinez 30th, were 2nd and 3rd in the Veterans race. The only senior runner was Polish girl Evelyn Rudden who took 37th overall clocking 56.50.
