The Gibraltar Petanque Association welcomed the Liphook U3A Boules Club from U.K. to their premises at Giralda Gardens on Friday 5 October 2012 for a friendly round of games.

These were played by mixed triples teams, and because of the visitors tight schedule on their day trip across from Spain, shortened versions of petanque games were played, to 10 points only, instead of the regulation 13 points.

Five triples teams represented each of the two clubs, with a total of 11 games played. Five games ended in tight scores of 10-9 or 10-8, one going to Gib. and four to the visitors, with the other six games ending in more clear cut scores ranging from 10-3 to 10-6, five going to Gib. and one to the visitors. The Gibraltar Petanque Association eventually edged the match by 6 games to 5, winning the last two games to come back from 5-4 down.

For Gibraltar one team won all three games they played – John and Elizabeth Dalli joined by Sheelagh Valarino recorded two wins by 10-9 and 10-3, then John and Elizabeth were joined by John Mascarenhas to record a third win again by 10-3.

It certainly proved to be a very successful and enjoyable venture for locals and visitors alike. The latter were very impressed by the facilities locally and the historical background to the Giralda Gardens site, and expressed their gratitude for the very warm Gibraltarian welcome they received.

The visit came about following an initial phone call received by the Association’s Secretary from the U.K. club, and followed by various emails eventually culminating in this very successful first visit which may well lead to further meetings in both directions.
