International Junior Hockey

Euro Hockey U’16 Girls Challenge III

Gibraltar’s Under 16 squad in their baptism of International hockey, could be said they performed very bravely and never lost faith despite heavy defeats against the host country,France.

The competition. Euro hockey under 16 Girls Challenge III was held in Wattignes, Francefrom Friday 6th to Sunday 8th July last with original participation of 5 countries.  Unfortunately for financial reasons,Portugal andTurkey withdrew from the event.  Thus onlyFrance,Georgia andGibraltar contested the tournament played on a two round robin format with the top 2 contesting the final.

The Gibraltar lasses made a most impressive start of the competition with a 3-1 win overGeorgia.  A very inspiring start for theGibraltarteam indeed who took the lead within 8 minutes form the start through Alexandra Casciaro, the result of a short corner.

Early in the second half, Kayleigh Sanchez increased Gibraltar’s lead with a very well taken penalty spot.  But 3 minutes later Georgiareduced arrears.  Slight nerves hit our girls but nonetheless managed to hold and on the 49th minute Georgia Byrne managed to score Gib’s 3rd goal for a final 3-1 win.

A couple of hours later Gibraltar’s girls real test was to come when they played a very strong Franceside that is without doubt 1st Division standard.  But due to not having participated in previous editions of the competition, the French girls were relegated to Division 3.

Despite a very gutsy performance Gibraltar succumbed toFranceto the tune of 7-0.

The following day, Gibraltar playedGeorgiaI their second encounter knowing a draw would suffice to make it to the final.  This they did giving way to quite a few substitutions so all the girls had their minutes on the pitch.

Again a couple of hours later, Gib were up against the formidable French team who gave no quarter.  A severe  13-0 hammering was the final story but it must be mentioned, theGibraltargirls fought bravely from start to finish.

So to the final, evidently againstFrancewho comfortably disposed ofGeorgia, also with heavy wins.

Despite the previous days hammering our girls came to the final highly motivated and hoping to do better and indeed they did.  They again lost by double figures (10-0) but it must be said, they tried very hard and put on a very gutsy performance.

To many these adverse results may say very little for our girls but quite the opposite.  Perhaps, they were outclassed by much, much stronger French team but found their level with the Georgia Girls and to me that is a very creditable performance that earned them a silver medal.

Well done girls, a lot of lessons must sure have been learned.

The Gibraltar Squad under the direction of Lianna Parral (Team Manager), Robert Grech (Coach) and Donna Streeter (Ass Coach) were :- Ashley Garcia (Capt.), Maxine Cano, Aroa Nuñez, Louise Flower, Emma Flower, Aryanne Mauro, Kammyl Hammond, Kayleigh Sanchez, Georgia Byrne, Rowan Byrne, Sean Dean, Alexandra Casciaro, Lucia Ferrary and Julianne Martinez.
